Kentucky Calcite Road Cut

Our second stop on our June trip was a place I was told about by a good friend of mine, from Lexington Kentucky. Out of respect for him I will not be divulging the exact location of this road cut. It is pretty sensitive to how many people dig there. The road cut is located in central KY. We traveled from Harrodsburg to this location and hunted it the same day. By the time we made it to the new hunting location it was around 6pm. We were tired and the heat of the day had reached 90 degrees. The road cut consists of several cuts some with more than one bench. Because of the time of the day and the fact that we had already pounded for 4 hours at Harrodsburg, plus the heat we only stayed at this cut for a few short hours.

Mother and I found some really nice calcite on calcite vugs with nice balls of dolomite resting in the mix. This is one site I wish I would have spent a little more time at.

What is truly amazing about this location are the different habits of calcite. We found the first generation of calcite to be a root beer brown dog-tooth with a second generation of clear calcite on top. Some of the second generation calcites are rhombohedral or scalenohedral crystals or both mixed on the same specimen. Some of the photos look like the tips of the calcites have been broken off, this is actually the second generation of calcite at the tips of the first generation crystals. The dolomite is of the Fe variety and show a very distinct ball grouping of crystals. Some of the vugs we encountered we on the measure of 8 inches across!

After hunting for a while here we decided to get a room in the Ft Knox area of KY and try our luck at a few other locations the next day…..it wasn’t to be. After putting on another 300 miles crisscrossing KY we were unable to find anything that was worth while to collect. We packed up and headed even further south into KY to other locations, but that is another story…

Till then
